Two dead and seven injured in Mandeni taxi rank shooting

A 35-year-old taxi driver was later found dead inside his minibus taxi not far from the taxi rank.

A gun battle, allegedly between two security companies, at the Mandeni Taxi Rank resulted in the death of two people and injured seven yesterday afternoon.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the two security companies work for different taxi associations.

“They also pelted each other with stones and seven people were injured and taken to hospital for medical attention, where a security guard was pronounced dead,” said Mbele.

Thirty minutes later, a 35-year-old taxi driver was found dead inside his minibus taxi at an informal settlement near the taxi rank.

The man had multiple gunshot wounds, said police.

“A case of murder and attempted murder were opened at Mandeni police station and a murder case was opened at Sundumbili police station.

“Provincial Organised Crime is investigating the incidents,” said Mbele.

In July last year, four taxi’s and two cars were set alight at the Mandeni taxi rank, after a gun battle between two taxi security companies that lasted about 40 minutes.
