Murdered Tongaat security guard’s partner says she will hold onto the good memories they created

Govender was the second guard from Jikelela Security to be killed for his firearm in less than 12 months.

Tongaat security guard Mervan Govender was murdered – apparently for his gun – while patrolling outside Golden Sun Supermarket last week.

Govender was the second guard from Jikelela Security to be killed for his firearm in less than 12 months.

The first was the murder of 59-year-old Dan Pillay who was shot and killed while guarding a commercial building in Tongaat last October.

Govender’s partner, Millie Bindeseri, said she was heartbroken by his death.

“I was told that he had just finished helping to offload a delivery van at the store and as he was walking, a man came from behind and grabbed him by his neck and he was shot at the back of his head. They took his work firearm before driving off. I believe they were after the firearm because they did not take anything from him besides the gun,” said Bindeseri.

She described Govender as a kind-hearted person who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

“As much as I am sad that he left in such a tragic way, I will hold onto the good memories we created together. I will miss the sense of safety that he brought with him whenever he was around me,” said Bindeseri.

Jikelela Security manager Aruna Chetty said Govender had been a dedicated and loyal employee for almost 10 years.

“He served the company with great passion and took pride in his job. He was a very kind and humble individual. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues, family and all who knew Mervan and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” said Chetty.

Tongaat police spokesperson, captain Patrick Ngwane said a murder docket had been opened.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson, Prem Balram, the robbers’ getaway vehicle did not have registration plates.

They were chased by onlookers but escaped into Hambanathi township.
