Sew it Seams flourishes into fully-fledged hub in Ballito

Owner Tanya van Wyk credits the surge in sewing activity to the Covid pandemic, as people rediscovered their old machines and love for crafting during lockdown.

So it seems sewing is still a thriving activity on the North Coast.

Starting out as a sewing school for children in Ballito seven years ago, Sew it Seams quickly blossomed into a full haberdashery, sewing school for all ages, a machine servicing centre and an official Bernina dealership.

The dealership is celebrating its fourth anniversary this month.

Owner Tanya van Wyk attributes much of the growth of her business to the Covid pandemic.

“People all had time to clean out their homes during the lockdown and rediscovered stored overlockers and sewing machines in the back of cupboards or in garages,” she says.

Blessed with one of the best technicians in the business, the outlet has offered its own onsite Bernina service centre for the past two years.

It has become well-known for its efficiency and effectiveness. They service all Bernina and bernette models, as well as all other makes.

Classes are held for those who need to sharpen their sewing prowess.

This includes morning classes for dressmaking, bag making, quilting, sewing technique, embroidery, and software.

Children from 10 years and older sew in the afternoons and have the privilege of using bernette machines in class.

Monthly adult beginner classes are by far the most popular as everything is included in the price.

To continue lessons at home, lots of fabric and habby are stocked to choose from.

People are welcome to join the anniversary celebrations on March 26 and 27 (4-6pm). Specials on certain models will be offered.

There will also be many giveaways for purchases of more than R300 during business hours on these two days.

A raffle draw for a bernette 44 overlocker will be held on March 27. Raffle tickets at R50 can be bought at the shop in Richard Park.

“Please come and celebrate this achievement with us. Our loyal customers were the driving force behind our success,” said Tanya.
