SA’s Amawheelagirls crush Kenya in Tongaat

The action is heating up in Tongaat as South Africa heads into the semi finals.

South Africa’s senior men’s and women’s national wheelchair basketball teams were back on the court yesterday for day five of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Africa World Championship Qualifiers currently being held at the Tongaat Sports Centre.

The teams are competing for the sole African spot in the world championships.

The ‘Amawheelagirls’ continued with their stellar form at the tournament and completely blew away Kenya with a resounding 47-7 victory to all but clinch their place in the Final against undefeated African champions, Algeria.

The South Africans produced a controlled and mature display and seized the initiative early on in the game, leaving the Kenyans with no answers. They went into the half time break having all but wrapped up the win at 29-7. The Algerians are now all that stands between them and a place at the World Cup in 2018.

Their male counterparts, the ‘Amawheelaboys’ had a tougher day at the office as they had to play both the undefeated Algerians as well as the tricky Angolans.

First up was the mighty Algerian side that has steamrolled its way through the tournament.

Showing great inventiveness and athleticism, the South African went into the half time break trailing the African champions 31-18.

The second half was a much tighter affair with Amawheelaboys giving it their all to mount an unlikely comeback, however the north Africans were too strong and clinched the game 66-47.

Next up in the evening was a date with an Angolan side that has flattered to deceive so far.

The South Africans were not quite sure what to expect, however their game plan was on point and they managed to impose themselves and take a 29-10 lead into the break.

They came back a more refreshed and motivated side to completely overwhelm the hapless Angolans and recorded a 54-24 win to clinch a semi final berth where they will  again meet the top ranked Algerians in what promises to be an intense struggle.
