Aiming for new beginnings

"It is frustrating that I meet people who don't and have never voted. What they do not realise is that the ANC is not going to govern forever."

South Africa needs a new beginning to steer away from the corrupt and inept government of the last two decades.

The Democratic Alliance member of parliament for Ilembe, Dean MacPherson, told about 50 people at the Ballito library on Monday night that the country needed improved education, financial controls and effective policing before it could begin to turn around.

“It is frustrating that I meet people who don’t and have never voted. What they do not realise is that the ANC is not going to govern forever. Look at what has happened in Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburg and Tshwane where DA governments have uncovered massive corruption and are busy recovering money and prosecuting officials.

“We can see now is that there is an alternative to the corruption and bad government, even by forming coalitions.”

MacPherson appealed to the gathering to work closely with their ward councillors to allow the party to start a new beginning in the 2021 local government elections.

Questioned on the state of Broad Economic Empowerment, Macpherson said that what had started out as a noble cause had become a self-enrichment scheme.

The ANC was critical of the number of whites still in ownership and management positions, but the real scandal was the poor education system that was leaving people behind and ill-equipped for business.

“We need broad empowerment, education and mentorship to lift people up into meaningful positions,” he said.
