Mothers rally for Ballito prem baby
Elrize Kruger received more than 200 calls and texts from mom's around KZN, as well as Johannesburg, offering to donate
New moms from far and wide have come together in support of a Ballito family’s premature baby who desperately needed breast milk after making her way into the world at only 31 weeks and two days.
Born on June 10, Tayla Grace Kruger weighed a meagre 995 grams when she greeted her parents, Elrize and Jason for the first time at Netcare Alberlito Hospital.
After suffering a placenta failure during her pregnancy, Tayla stopped growing at just 27 weeks and Elrize had no choice but to go under the knife.
With Elrize unable to breastfeed, and formula not being an option as it does not contain sufficient vitamins, minerals and protein for Tayla in her fragile state, the family appealed to the community for breast milk donors.
After an article was posted on The Courier‘s website, it was shared 971 times on Facebook and donations started pouring in.
Word quickly spread and Elrize received more than 200 calls and texts from mom’s around KZN, as well as Johannesburg, offering to donate.
“We have received enough donations to keep her going until she reached 1.6kgs,” said Elrize.
“At the moment, she is 1.23kgs and getting stronger.”
Tayla was transferred to Umhlanga Hospital on Tuesday to have a permanent drip inserted into her chest, as Doctor’s are battling to find a vein in her small, fragile hands.
This will be replaced every 28 days, until she reaches 2kgs and is ready to be taken home.
