Final result: ANC loses ground to opposition in KwaDukuza

Newcomers EFF, AIC, Al Jamaa and two independents gained seats in council for the first time.

The African National Congress has retained its overall majority in the 2016 local government elections, but has lost significant ground to opposition parties.

Support for the ANC dropped from 69.9% in 2011 to 63.o6% in 2016, while the Democratic Alliance went up from 14.05% in 2011 to 19.04%.

The second most significant opposition party the Inkatha Freedom Party lost ground from 7.44% in 2011 to 6.29% this year, while newcomers Economic Freedom Fighters, African Independent Congress, Al Jamaa and two independents gained seats in council for the first time.

The final seat count in KwaDukuza council is ANC 36, DA 11, IFP 4, EFF 2, Independents 2, AIC and Al Jamaa one each.

The African Christian Democratic Party has lost its council seat.

All four Ballito and Salt Rock wards were won by the DA, plus one additional ward in Stanger Manor.

The new Ward 21 (Ballito south and Driefontein) was won by the DA with 41.49% and ANC only managed to get 34.24%.

Driefontein was previously an ANC ward.

Interesting to note was the high number of votes gained by independents candidates for ward two in the Darnal area and 27 in the Kearsney area, although they were unable to take the lead away from the ANC.

In ward two, the independent candidate came second with 20.46% and the ANC won by 48.17%.
