Community rallies as Dolphin Coast voting stations are plunged into darkness

KwaDukuza Municipality's electrical engineer, Nick Hall said the power outage was caused by the gale force wind and cable theft.

A strong community effort was seen in Salt Rock and Tinley Manor last night when the electricity went off during voting at about 5pm and remained out late into the night for a large part of the counting of the ballots.

A true sense of ubuntu was shown by residents  who came together to assist at the three Ward 22 voting stations affected by providing LED lights and candles.

Salt Rock resident, Murray van Rooyen said that he, along with about 12 other Salt Rock residents brought candles and LED lights to the voting stations.

“I thought to myself that this was a bad time for the electricity to go off. People still needed to vote.

“We went to the Salt Rock Library with the LED lights and candles. Some drove to other sites as well.”

Ward 22 Cllr Malcolm Hubner  said that residents had been phenomenal and rallied to the cause.

” Tinley Manor was the worst affected where the power was off until around midnight, and Sizani School had no power for several hours” said Hubner.

Hubner said the municipality had however manger to restore power to Salt Rock Library within half an hour.

KwaDukuza Municipality‘s electrical engineer, Nick Hall said that the outage was caused by the gale force wind and cable theft.

“The power outage in Salt Rock started was caused by the strong wind that we had yesterday.

“When we got to the Tinley Manor section, however, we found that people had attempted to steal the cables.

“We worked tirelessly to restore the electricity,” he said.
