R102 near Mandeni burns for water

People claim government is not providing them with water.

Protesters have blocked the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu with burning logs, apparently because they are fed up with government’s inability to supply them with water during the drought.

What has been described as the worst drought in 100 years, started two years ago and areas in the Ilembe district where the taps have run dry have been supplied water by tankers.

However, people living in the rural area between Gingindlovu and Mandeni claim they have not been delivered water.

“I received a call from one of my security guards who told me my cane was on fire,” said Chris Morgan, a local sugar cane farmer who farms along that stretch of the R102.

Morgan went to have a look and saw it was not his cane that was burning but that the road had been blocked with logs and set alight.

“I spoke to an elderly lady on the road who told me that they were protesting against the government’s inability to provide them with water.”
