Police chase protesters off N2, R102 still closed

The N2 has been reopened.

The cops used rubber bullets to chase protesters off the Chakas Rock bridge above the N2 just before 7am this morning.

The highway is now open but the R102 remains closed.

The crowd – about 500 strong – blocked the N2 with burning tyres and branches from the early hours of this morning.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the people were demanding the removal of Shakashead councillor Banda.

The situation remains tense as the crowd have reportedly been trying to reform on the N2.
