No water for ablution container

Municipality fails to fill Jojo tanks for residents to use ablution facilities.

The arrival of an ablution facility for the poverty stricken residents of Shaka’s Head tin houses was an answer to prayer, but has now become a cruel joke as they are unable to use the facility because the Jojo tanks are not being filled by the municipality.

These people have been living without electricity, water or toilets, for the past four years.

The container, delivered on September 13 with much fanfare, is fitted with four toilets and two showers, two hand basins and four windows, skylights and vents.

The donation was made possible by Tamsyn Ferreira from Alifurn Outdoor Living in the Shaka’s Head business park who raised the money for the container.

Resident Khayelihle Ndlovu said after the container was given to them, the tanks had been filled twice.

“When the tanks were filled it only lasted for a few days and we suspect that only one tank was filled,” said Ndlovu.

He said to use the toilets they collect water with buckets from the stand pipe, but, he said, not everyone is clean.

Their councillor, Jetro Banda, said this was news to him and if they had reported the problem he could have done something about it.

“I must admit I should have kept a close eye on them to ensure that everything was in order. But I will visit them this week to check and try and come up with a plan to help,” said Banda.

In terms of supplying electricity, Banda promised the community that by end of this year, light will be available for the residents.
