Workers attack school bus

Rioting workers tried to take over a school bus on its way to Rain Farm Lodge on Wednesday.

Angry, fired construction workers, demonstrating at the Avon Peaking Power Plant in Shakaskraal stopped a school bus full of children on Wednesday, September 30 and tried to take the bus keys from the driver.

Rain Farm Lodge’s Sunette Reichert said the children were on their way to an excursion on the game farm when the bus they were traveling in was stopped by the protesters.

Fortunately the protesters were unsuccessful in their attempt and the bus made it to the lodge.

The mob also attacked a bakery truck on the same day and stole its load of cakes and breads.

The situation at the plant was relatively calm this morning but demonstrators were unhappy when a special group of about 30 workers were ferried in from Durban to work at the plant this morning.

Umhlali SAPS’ Captain Y I Maharaj said the mob was waiting for the 30 workers to come out of the gates at the plant after work.

Meanwhile, shop stewards, a Group 5 representative and KwaDukuza Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu are locked in a meeting to try and resolve the matter.
