New life for promenade benches

Dolphin Coast Conservancy steps in to help.

Many of the benches scattered across Ballito’s promenade are in memory of a loved one who has passed away, while also offering a place to rest and admire the ocean.

The Dolphin Coast Conservancy recently started to renovate the wooden benches, from Willards Beach right up to the Zimbali border fence.

Dolphin Coast Conservancy chairperson Di Jones said the benches have been a great success, with there now being a total of 45 benches.

“Once the promenade was rebuilt after the 2007 storms, we approached the municipality to see if there was any way we could assist in getting seating made in various spots. They gave their approval and we started a

campaign whereby individuals or companies sponsored a bench, and were able to put a small plaque on the back of it. Unfortunately, we have no more room for any more,”said Jones.

She said Classwood made and fitted the benches at cost.

“The oldest of the benches are now in need of some TLC, and this has been made possible by some of our main sponsors. We would like to give special thanks to Sembcorp Siza Water, Dolphin Coast Landfill Management, Snow

Cogan of Talk International, the Umhlali Garden Club and the many other donors who make our projects possible. We have not finalised sponsorship of the paint as yet, but hope to do so shortly. Thank you also to the volunteers who are overseeing the work.”
