Cops arrest 24 for Tongaat riot

Community says their need for electricity is being ignored.

Twenty-four residents of Emona, Staren section, were arrested by Tongaat SAPS today.

KZN SAPS spokesperson captain Thulani Zwane said a case of public violence has been opened.

“Police are monitoring the area and road has been opened,” said Zwane.

The residents blocked the main road in Tongaat this morning, saying that Ethekwini municipality has ignored the need for electricity in their area.

“We want the mayor to tell us when we are going to get electricity,” said a resident, who did not want to be named in fear of retribution.

They say this is why so many people in their community are injured while trying to set up illegal connections.

Yesterday three men died while trying to connect electricity for their homes.

Half brothers Zenzele Malinga (23) and Thamsanqa Zungu ( 19), and their friend Ngane Langa died when one of them was electrocuted and the other two tried to help him and they were also hit by the electric current.
