We asked our readers where they go to find a bargain, and it turns out that supporting local pays off.

Here are our top six places to shop in Tongaat, Ballito and KwaDukuza to grab your homegrown fresh veggies, and a host of homemade goodies, from pickles to fresh banana bread.

  1. Cindy’s Fresh Produce in Umhlali: Cindy’s in Umhlali is an institution with the North Coast community and Cindy is known as the local curry queen. Stock up on fresh veggies grown on her farm, pickles and her signature hot mazavaroo.

  2. Ballito Farmers Market: Located on the R102 between Umhlali and Shakaskraal, the market offers a variety of vegetables and fruit. Explore a diverse selection of stalls offering everything from health and wellness products to handmade crafts, artisanal goodies, flavourful sauces and trendy fashion finds. You will find everything from jewellery to garden plants and, of course, Cindy’s fresh farm produce. Enjoy live entertainment while you shop and grab a bite to eat. Open every Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays from 8am to 3pm – free entry, safe parking, and pet-friendly!

  3. Salt Rock Farmer’s Market: Every Thursday morning from 7am-12pm, the Salt Rock Farmer’s Market at Slow Roads (opposite Brettenwood) comes alive. When you buy from a local vendor, you’re not just getting a handmade product or freshly grown produce; you’re helping someone’s small dream thrive. We love the fresh banana bread, pancakes and artisanal cheese from The Big Cheese!

  4. Bloom Special Needs School: Bloom in Umhlali sells flowers on Tuesdays, fresh bread on Wednesdays and lettuce and herb packs on Thursdays. The school plans to eventually open its own restaurant and shop so that the school’s pupils can be gainfully employed after graduating.   5. Stanger Vegetable Market: This bustling market is a local favourite, full of life and colour. Located next to the taxi rank, it offers a wide selection of fresh vegetables and fruits. Prices may change with the seasons and fuel costs, but it’s always a good place to shop for daily essentials. If you are on King Shaka Street you can also visit the Eat Fresh Food Market. Street vendors are plentiful in Stanger, with fresh spinach and amadumbe always within easy reach.

  6. Tongaat Daily Market: The Tongaat Daily Market has been in operation since 1948 and is a top spot for fresh produce. The bustling market feeds thousands of people every week and is a hive of activity. When in Tongaat you should also visit Faheems Fresh Produce at 15 Arbee Drive and the little shop next to Sigh’s Restaurant in the CBD, opposite the eThekwini Sizakala Centre, where you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables. And don’t miss the vendor selling packets of chopped spinach at the corner of Laura and Gopalail Street – just R10 a bag, perfect for a quick and easy meal.
