Quiz fundraiser boost for local Masters World Cup hockey campaigners

Sold-out event raises R53 000 for eight North Coast players to compete in Cape Town next month.

Some of the North Coast’s best athletes joined forces with some of its best minds for a fundraising quiz event last week.

The quiz night raised funds for eight local masters hockey players who will next month travel to the Masters World Cup in Cape Town. A sold out crowd of 120 people filled Siggi’s German Restaurant and Pub in Salt Rock last Wednesday, in support of the group, contributing via tickets and auctions to reach a whopping total of over R53 000.

“We were thrilled with the turnout and it was such a warm and happy evening,” said Genevieve Chisholm, who will play in the women’s 40 team.

“We feel super blessed to have had the support and really want to thank the community for having our backs. We’re ready to go and create waves in Cape Town!”

The North Coast has nine players involved in the tournament, which is split into the WMH World Cup and IMC World Cup, essentially an ‘A’ and ‘B’ national team per age group.

Chisholm and Lauren Glossop (both women’s 40) and Rochelle van Staden, Shelley Jones and Jaclyn Capazario (all women’s 35) will lace up in the WMH tournament.

Danielle Robert-Hardman and Joanne le Roux (both women’s 35) and Zenon Jagiela (men’s 35) will represent South Africa in the IMC event.

Umdloti’s Robyn Wiggett will travel to New Zealand as part of the women’s 55 team.

All nine are self-funded and have to pay for their kits and equipment, on top of the travel and accommodation costs.

The eight Cape Town bound players will compete between October 12 and 21, while Wiggett’s age group will get underway in New Zealand from November 7-16.
