Hip surgery? No problem! Young golfer Matthew swings to podium finish in Junior Africa Challenge

Determined Ashton pupil Matthew Smith earns second place in the under-13 division.

Despite undergoing hip surgery earlier this year, 13-year-old Ashton International College pupil Matthew Smith secured a podium finish at the recent Junior Africa Golf Challenge held at San Lameer Country Club.

Hosted by SA Kids Golf, the tournament is one of the continent’s largest junior golfing events, with 194 young golfers from 11 countries participating this year.

Over three days of intense competition, Matthew’s determination saw him move up the leaderboard, before carding an impressive 79 on the final day to earn second place in the boys U13 division.

He followed this up representing South Africa in the Dunbar Cup tournament on August 23 against an international team. Although drawing in his match, his contributions were crucial in securing a victory for the South African side.

Matthew has been playing golf since the age of five. This was his third competition since undergoing hip surgery that left him sidelined for 12 weeks.
