CERT Founder and Tongaat CPF Chairman Nazir Sadack dies, leaving legacy of service

Sadack will be remembered for his dedication and compassion

Nazir Sadack, the founder of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and chairman of the Tongaat Community Policing Forum (CPF), died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning after suffering a stroke.

Hailed a community hero, Sadack was a staunch advocate of Ubuntu and always ready to help those in need.

Most recently he assisted victims of the recent tornado despite his own home being damaged. Instead of focusing on his own repairs, Sadack was on the ground helping those more severely affected.

His dedication to helping others began after his wife suffered a stroke. Unable to assist her until paramedics arrived, he found it agonising to watch her suffer as precious minutes slipped away. This experience led to the establishment of CERT as one of the most reliable community-driven search and rescue organisations on the coast.

Tongaat resident Ractheal Pillay described Sadack as a true pillar of the community, dedicating over a decade of his life to serving others with unwavering commitment, passion and integrity.

“He was more than just a leader; he was a beacon of hope for many. His profound dedication to the safety and well-being of our beloved Tongaat has forever changed the landscape of our neighbourhood,” said Pillay.

“He rallied individuals from all walks of life, inspiring them to unite toward a common goal of creating a safer, more caring environment. Through his work with the CPF, he forged connections that empowered countless community members, reminding us all that together we could achieve great things.”

IPSS Medical and IPSS Search & Rescue owner Dylan Meyrick, who had a close working relationship with Sadack, said they were devastated by his death.

“He spent his life giving back, and his loss will be sorely felt by his family, friends and the community he served through CERT and in his personal capacity,” said Meyrick.

Tongaat police spokesperson, Captain Jasanathan Naidoo, also acknowledged Sadack’s huge contribution to the Tongaat community and the local police over the past ten years.
