The Groutville Sports Fields buzzed with excitement as hundreds gathered for the annual Chief Albert Luthuli Walk and Fun Run on Saturday.

This year’s event marked 52 years since Chief Luthuli’s untimely death.

Participants chose between two routes: a 7.7km run and an 11.5km walk. Both routes started from the Luthuli Museum, each offering a unique experience through Groutville’s historical landmarks.

Sphelele Mkhize, Thandeka Thusi, Nokukhanya Gabela and Zama Mtshali.

The 11.5km walk, starting from the Luthuli Museum on Nokukhanya Luthuli Street, led walkers to the memorial site, passing Chief Albert Luthuli’s grave at the Groutville United Congregational Church.

The route ended at the Groutville Sports Ground. The walk included notable sites such as the Aldinville Primary School, where Chief Luthuli began his education and the King Shaka Observation Rock, a national monument.

Thanda Ndlela, Mpendulo Mthembu and Ntombifuthi Mkhize.

According to legend Shaka used to sit on this rock to watch his impis from his three military camps train.

The event was a blend of fitness, family fun, and exhibitions. Children enjoyed face paintings and jumping castles.

Chairperson of the Luthuli Museum council, Mxolisi Mchunu, encouraged young people to be champions of peace.

“Luthuli was known for his influence, and he chose to use it to encourage peace. As a country, we should join in and make sure that everywhere we go, we encourage peace,” said Mchunu.

He thanked all the stakeholders who contributed to making this year’s event a success.
