Tongaat Hulett steps up relief efforts for tornado victims

The Tongaat community continues to receive essential support.

Help is still streaming in from all corners to support Tongaat residents left devastated by last month’s tornado.

Thousands of people were left homeless by the disaster, especially in Magwaveni, Sandfields and Seatides. Twelve people were killed and about 20 schools destroyed.

Among those affected were some Tongaat Hulett employees, whose chief people officer, Sashir Milne, expressed deep concern.

Covenant Fellowship Church International (CFCI) members ready to distribute much-needed items in Tongaat.

“Our close ties with the Tongaat community compelled us to act swiftly. We are committed to supporting our employees and the broader community through this challenging time,” said Milne.

Tongaat Hulett mobilised a collaborative effort with various non-profit organisations, including the Red Cross and UNICEF, alongside local government bodies and religious organisations.

Their immediate focus was on clearing debris and distributing essential supplies such as food, water and clothing to the hardest hit areas.

Maidstone Mill, under Tongaat Hulett’s stewardship, is providing 200 meals daily in partnership with the Red Cross to alleviate immediate hunger among the displaced.
