New digital ID initiative to protect children at Ballito Pro

The Rise Up Movement will provide the wristbands for free at big events.

A digital identification wristband is the latest initiative by The Rise Up Movement to protect local children.

The initiative was presented by NGO founder Josha Daniel at the iLembe Chamber of Commerce last Friday.

The NGO will first make the wristband available – for free – at the Ballito Pro at Willard Beach. Daniel said this would assist in reuniting lost children with their families.

The programme involves uploading detailed information onto a secure system, including photographs, parental/guardian contact details, medical information, and next of kin.

This data is then processed onto a wristband, which acts as a quick-access tool if a child becomes separated from their caregivers.

When scanned the wristband provides essential contact information, expediting the process of reporting missing children to Saps. It can also store additional details such as medical conditions.

The wristbands will be available at The Ballito Pro this year.

This initiative will be used during busy periods like the festive season, at the beaches and during big events.

“Parents have a choice to not use the wristband for their children. The personal information will not be made public but will be accessible to authorities and relevant stakeholders in that specific place,” said Daniel.

The long-term plan is to introduce it into schools and make it available in disadvantaged communities, with the help of CPF members.

iLembe police commissioner Major General Anthony Gopaul, who attended the launch, expressed gratitude for the programme.

“We are committed to working with anyone with a common cause to serve and protect, and in this case, it’s keeping children safe,” said Gopaul.

He noted that during school holidays, children are often left unattended, and such programmes could be of great assistance in emergencies.
