Proof of success: Shayamoya bakery elevates unemployed youth with free baking lessons

Breadwinners in the making.

Shayamoya entrepreneur Fox Zungu, owner of Mnandi Bakery, recently offered free baking lessons to 10 young people in his township.

The graduates received their baking certificates at the Shayamoya Sports Theatre on Saturday.

Zungu’s initiative aims to equip the youth with practical skills to start their own businesses and secure jobs.

The six-month course taught the participants various baking techniques and they gained hands-on experience.

Zungu said with more equipment he could increase the number of students each year.

The students who completed the course are Nosipho Gumede, Thembelihle Ntuli, Thobile Zungu, Anele Thusi, Ntomboxolo Mntungwa, Sphelele Gumede, Velephi Khumalo, Nosiphelo Mbendeni, Snenhlanhla Cele and Xolisile Gxabhashe.

Before the course the students had no knowledge of baking.

Now, they can bake bread, rolls and cakes. They were also taught about the importance of hygiene in the workplace and how to use bakery tools.

Zungu’s effort highlights the positive impact of community-based training programmes.

By providing free lessons, he hopes to inspire more young people to pursue similar opportunities, contributing to the overall development of Shayamoya.

Zungu previously worked as a bakery manager at various supermarkets.

In 2020, he realised there was a business opportunity in his township. His main focus is on baking bread, but he also bakes cakes on request.

In addition to his popular bunny chow and brown breads, he is widely known for his delicious yellow bread, also known as raisin bread.

The baker was one of the finalists in the 2022 iLembe Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur competition.
