Amanda the ‘Sweat Squad Queen’ makes fitness accessible in Darnall

Amanda's exercise sessions are free and are run three or four times a week depending on demand.

Darnall’s Amanda Mchunu is getting her community moving.

The 25-year-old discovered a love for exercise after making the decision to get herself in shape a few years ago.

Using a public gym in Zamani Township, where she grew up, Amanda learned how to properly lift weights and use her body weight for training.

“It was mostly YouTube videos that showed me how to do the right things when exercising,” she said.

“I’m not a qualified personal trainer, but I just want to help people reach their fitness goals and feel better about themselves.”

Her fitness groups first began when she posted a video on social media, asking her followers to reach out if they were looking for advice when starting a new exercise regime.

The keen Darnall fitness group.

At first there was just one or two people at her public sessions but it has grown to a regular group of between 10 and 15 ladies.

“So many people want to start exercising but have no idea how to do it,” she said.

“I have some ladies trying to get fit after pregnancy and others who have diabetic concerns. All are welcome, including kids.”

Amanda’s exercise sessions are free and are generally run three or four times a week depending on demand.
