Off-road biking a family affair

They are now gearing up for their next big challenge, next year's Impi Bronze Race.

Once Les Coetzee puts on his helmet, age becomes just a number and the only thing on his mind is conquering trails on his bike.

The 43-year-old Ballito resident and owner of a motorbike dealership in Umhlali is a dedicated off-road rider, finding exhilaration in every ride through the hills of Glendale.

For Coetzee, any day is a good day to hop on his machine, but one particular adventure stands out – the Iron Horse Funduro Series races in which he teamed up with his 10-year-old son, Linc.

The thrill of the ride, coupled with the bond between father and son, made it a special experience.

They are now gearing up for their next big challenge, next year’s Impi Bronze Race. The dates are still to be announced.

Rough terrain is a breeze for Les Coetzee.

Beyond the thrill of riding, Coetzee extends his passion to helping others. As a responsible biker, he takes it upon himself to assist customers who are still mastering the art of off-road riding.

Offering one-on-one coaching sessions, he emphasises the importance of proper training to navigate the potential dangers of the sport.

Reflecting on the inherent risks, Coetzee stresses the need for riders to be well-versed in the art of falling and handling their bikes in various situations.

Safety is paramount, and he believes the right equipment combined with professional training can make all the difference in the safety stakes.

Coetzee’s journey into biking began at the age of 23, and he has since immersed himself in various races, from national supermoto events to KZN cross country and enduro races.

A father of two, he’s passing on his expertise to the next generation, having started coaching Linc at the tender age of two. His 13-year-old daughter Amber is also a keen biker.

Linc said he loves riding and has never been injured.

“I like that it takes lots of strength to control and handle the bike. I’m hoping I will one day get a bike to ride to school,” he said.
