Unemployed residents get to work cleaning Magwaveni township

This move not only enhanced their ability to keep Magwaveni clean but also opened other avenues for cleaning jobs in the broader North Coast area.

A proactive volunteer group have taken it upon themselves to clean up the streets in Tongaat’s Magwaveni township.

Hoping to sow the seeds of positive change, they hope to inspire a cleaner, greener future for their community.

The Ciyakhanyisa Multipurpose Primary Co-op was formed by a group of unemployed residents dedicating themselves to address rampant illegal dumping and littering in the streets.

Leader Thokozani Mazibuko said with an abundance of time on their hands, they decided to channel their efforts into transforming their township.

He expressed his concern about children using unhygienic dumpsites as play areas, emphasising the need for residents to understand the dangers of littering.

The group began their clean-up initiative at the end of May, working from 8.30-11am on Mondays to Fridays.

Although they started with a larger number of volunteers, the core group now consists of 10 members.

Recognising the potential for a more significant impact, they opted to formalise their efforts by registering a cooperative.

This move not only enhanced their ability to keep Magwaveni clean but also opened other avenues for cleaning jobs in the broader North Coast area.

Despite municipal employees cleaning the streets, Mazibuko criticised the lack of resident participation, noting the swift return of litter shortly after clean-up operations.

He stressed the importance of educating the community about the consequences of pollution and appealed for support of this endeavour.

Looking ahead, the group aspires to convert the once litter-strewn sites into vegetable gardens and recreational parks for children to promote community well-being.

Any businesses or individuals willing to sponsor cleaning materials or join the campaign, can contact Mazibuko at 060 806 1576.
