The 40-year-old mother encourages others facing challenges to embrace a positive attitude and keep the faith.

Belvedere resident Pam Ramsaroop’s tough journey is a true testament to the power of resilience and a positive frame of mind when faced by life’s challenges.

As one of the guest speakers at the Belvedere Volunteer Group’s women empowerment event at Trubel Primary School on Sunday, she shared her inspiring story of overcoming depression, a cancer diagnosis and battling sarcoidosis.

In 2014, Ramsaroop was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a debilitating lung condition, after suffering the loss of her mother and three siblings in just four years.

She said she continued to face adversity when her mother in law was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer last year, leading to her death in March.

Adding to her challenges, she was diagnosed with papillary breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in November.

Ramsaroop emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, highlighting the significant impact of mental strength on physical well-being.

“I am currently on a five-year oral treatment plan. It was a dark and challenging period but my husband, family and friends never faltered in their support. This unwavering love and strength sustained us and together we fought back,” she said.

Her resilience was also demonstrated during her pregnancy in 2017 when doctors advised her to terminate because of her lung condition.

She chose to continue and is now blessed with a healthy five-year-old daughter.

The Belvedere Volunteer Group, initially formed during the Tongaat water crisis, has expanded its efforts beyond crisis management.

Engaging in community upliftment activities, the group also runs the Belvedere flea market to sustain its needs.

Recently, they established the Women’s Empowerment wing, providing a platform for women to come together, share their journeys and support each other.
