Sensory library opens doors to learning at Tongaat

To date, LEARN has donated almost 81 000 books, established 23 school libraries, and placed 339 book corners in schools and organisations.

A new sensory library at the Tongaat School for Learners with Special Educational Needs, opened last week, will significantly enhance the local community’s access to interactive educational resources.

A partnership project of The LEARN Project and Toys R Us, the library holds more than a thousand books, providing interactive experiences with the aim of awakening the imagination and bringing stories to life for the children who visit.

The LEARN Project is a South African non-profit trust with the vision of putting a book into the hands of every pupil in the country to foster a love of reading and learning so that they may reach their full potential.

“The sensory library is an interactive room filled with wonder and knowledge with the purpose of encouraging learning through the power of books,” said LEARN co-founder, Roslynne Toerien.

A space of tranquility where knowledge awaits.

“The wide variety of books contained in the new library include touch and feel tactile books, auditory, light, sound, pop-up and number books, as well as interactive story boxes with visual story aids that bring stories to life.”

Toys R Us marketing manager Catherine Jacoby said the sensory library embraces different ways of learning and encourages children to grow in a safe and happy space that has been specifically designed for their needs.
