#Letter: Taxpayers should not fund gifts

"In a recent Exco meeting an item celebrating heritage was presented. This included a gift for the premier who was invited to be part of the programme" - KwaDukuza DA caucus leader Tammy Colley.

KwaDukuza DA caucus leader Tammy Colley writes:

Heritage Day recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation.

South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the heritage of the many cultures that make up the country.

Our game parks are accessed free of charge to highlight our wildlife heritage which is arguably the best in the world.

Our diversity as a country is something we should embrace, cherish and value. By embracing our differences in experiences, thoughts, talents and knowledge, we can understand our country and each other better.

In a recent Exco meeting last Tuesday, an item celebrating heritage was presented. This included a gift for the premier who was invited to be part of the programme.

The Democratic Alliance argued against this. Public representatives from councillors to premiers, and even the president, are in office to serve the citizens of South Africa.

Taxpayers should not be expected to buy gifts of appreciation for politicians doing their jobs over and above the salaries they
are paid.
