Shakaskraal repeat offender sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment

The minimum sentence of 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances was sought, but the court deviated given Sicelo Ngiba's age.

A repeat offender in Shakaskraal will spend his next 12 years in prison after recently being sentenced for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Sicelo Ngiba (26) robbed and stabbed a 50-year-old woman who was on her way to work in Shakaskraal in September last year.

Walking along Jasmine Drive early in the morning, Ngiba approached the woman and grabbed her bag containing cash, bank cards and her cell phone.

A short struggle took place, in which time Ngiba stabbed her.

The injuries were not life-threatening but were serious enough to prevent the woman from working for an extended period of time, the court heard.

Ngiba was later arrested by Umhlali Saps investigating officer, sergeant Zungu, using information from witnesses and video footage of the incident.

Public prosecutor Nokwanda Mthembu led evidence at the KwaDukuza Regional Court, including a victim impact statement and details of a previous offence.

Mthembu cited the fact that women are vulnerable to contact crimes in South Africa and that offenders should be punished.

The minimum sentence of 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances was sought, but the court deviated given Ngiba’s age.
