Shaye Caldicott claims Miss Ballito 2023 crown

Caldicott was thrilled with the win and could not hold back a few tears when receiving her crown from last year's winner, Melissa Landman.

Eighteen-year-old Shaye Caldicott was crowned Miss Ballito 2023 at a glamorous final event at Collisheen Estate last week.

After months of intense workshops and community programmes, Caldicott reigned supreme in a strong year with eight finalists who could have all won on the night.

Chloe Craig (22) and Lindiwe Khumalo (24) were selected as first and second princesses respectively and, together with Caldicott, form the faces of Miss Ballito for the next calendar year.

Started by the Rotary Club of Zimbali, the Miss Ballito pageant has raised more than R865 000 for charity in its 11 years of operation.

The finalists all had their last chance to impress at Collisheen Estate on Thursday night, walking in casual wear, swimsuits and evening wear before answering one question each.

Scores from the final were added to an ongoing scoring system throughout the pageant which aims to provide a holistic competition rather than one based on looks alone.

Miss Ballito winners need to be confident, empathetic and engaged in their communities.

This year’s finalists acquitted themselves well throughout the process, said organiser Heidie Smith.

“Draw on these networks you have built and work together for change. Use your voice, it is powerful and it is healing.”

For her part, Caldicott was thrilled with the win and could not hold back a few tears when receiving her crown from last year’s winner, Melissa Landman.

Caldicott is a first year university student and has a passion for dance, including it in her community projects and hoping to pursue it professionally in the future.

Aside from the main event, guests at the finals evening were entertained by Keah Rose and Stavros Vassilatos, who sang ‘A Million Dreams’ and ‘Shallow’ respectively.

Smith closed by thanking all of the sponsors, without whom the pageant would not be possible.

All finalists are sponsored individually, while Beach and Beyond Swimwear, Lush Boutique, Noxy Williams, Gerald Wells Hair & Beauty and Love Laugh Ballito helped to make the finals event one to remember.
