ANC takes back Maphumulo after vote of no confidence in IFP

Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini of the ANC elected as the new mayor.

The tide turned for the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) last Thursday when it lost Maphumulo municipality to the African National Congress (ANC).

This came after a vote of no confidence by the ANC against the IFP leadership, the mayor Siboniso Nyatikazi, and speaker Msawenkosi Ngidi.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) voted with the ANC at a special council meeting at the municipal council chambers.

Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini of the ANC was elected as the new mayor and Sinenhlanhla Chili of the EFF as speaker.

Chili was previously deputy mayor when the EFF was in a coalition with the IFP.

Maphumulo speaker, Sinenhlanhla Chili.

Khuzwayo-Dlamini, previously mayor for the 2016-2021 term, promised immediate action to address key issues.

“There is a lot to do. Service delivery and local economic development to create jobs for our community are high on our list of priorities. I hope that through a united stand by the municipal council, we will be able to serve the people of Maphumulo diligently,” she said.

The new deputy mayor will be elected at the next council meeting.
