PMB Girls’ High equips a generation of independent young women

Girls leave the school at the end of matric with a questioning mind and confidence in their ability.

The educational ethos at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) mirrors what the great Martin Luther King Jr once said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

This is the goal of GHS. What is offered and taught in the classrooms, on the sport fields, through music and cultural interaction, reading and books – and through success and failure – spark intelligence and wisdom, which builds true character.

When girls leave the school at the end of matric with a questioning mind and confidence in their ability, the influence they can have on those with whom they will work or study should be significant.

GHS’s wish is that parents allow their daughters to learn about life, through their own experiences, just as they did.

There is an increasing tendency for parents to do everything for their daughters. GHS, the parent and the teacher, must remember that building character is as important as fostering the development of intelligence.

This is the 103rd year since GHS was founded. This great school has represented excellence in education for girls since 1920 and its mission continues to be the pursuit of excellence. Every day the school challenges each girl to be the best that she can possibly be.

As a leading school for girls, both academically and extramurally, GHS is delighted to offer pupils the chance of experiencing the indomitable Girls’ High ethos of Cheerfulness with Industry.
