#ReportBack: Plans underway to repair N2 and R102 roads

Although several interventions have been put in place to mitigate the challenges, the public continues to call for speedy repairs of these essential pathways that drive our district's economy.

As traffic congestion and accidents continue to be a major challenge on the R102 and N2 between Ballito and Stanger, the much needed update on repair plans from the minister’s desk is a welcome development.

But peak hour traffic caused by the damage of the Etete bridge on the R102 (northbound), together with the damage of the Mhlali bridge (northbound), continues to frustrate motorists.

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula recently communicated the following plans:

• Repair and rehabilitation work on the N2 and N3 is already underway at a total cost of R542.5-million. This will be funded from the Sanral budget.

• Design and construction drawings to repair the Mhlali River bridge (northbound) have been finalised. He anticipated that repair work will be completed in three months from the date of awarding of the contract.

• Engagements are underway with National Treasury and the National Disaster Management Centre to fund repairs to provincial roads. This funding of R3.1-billion will be allocated through the provincial road maintenance grant. The province initially requested assistance of R5.1-billion through re-prioritisation of the provincial budget, the shortfall will be funded by the province.
Roads and structures that have also been identified for priority repairs and rehabilitation are:

• R102 slipway at Mhlali River bridge No 2556: Repairs will take one month to complete once the contract has been awarded.

• R102 Etete River Bridge No. 2073: Repairs will take 6 weeks to complete once the contract has been awarded. Sanral has been appointed as the implementing agent for this work.

The DA in KwaDukuza will continue to provide feedback on these interventions and ensure that the relevant stakeholders are kept abreast on developments.
