WATCH: Looting and rioting escalates in Tongaat

Motorists are urged to proceed with extreme caution if driving overnight.

Protesting has reignited in Tongaat tonight with reports of looting and rioting in the streets and the closure of the N2.

“I can confirm that there is ongoing looting in Tongaat currently, with Shoprite, Checkers and bottle stores targeted,” said Umhlali Saps spokesperson, Vinny Pillay.

Protesters have shut down parts of the highway and the N2 northbound after Tongaat toll towards Ballito is closed, he said.

Umhlali Saps officers are on scene.

There have also been unconfirmed reports of a log blocking the road on the M4 at Beach Bums in the same location as protests on Friday.

There are further unconfirmed reports of a road closure owing to protest action on the R74 at Madundube.

Although curfew is currently in place, protesting is expected to continue through the night with widely circulated calls to action on social media following former president Jacob Zuma’s arrest last week.

“KwaDukuza saps urges members of the community to take precautions when traveling, due to the extremely volatile situations of protesting in KwaDukuza and surrounding areas. We urge member of the community to be safe in their homes and not to travel unnecessarily within the KwaDukuza area,” said KwaDukuza saps spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar.

“We urge members of the community to strictly adhere to the lockdown curfew times and to adhere to all lockdown restrictions. Please report all cases of vandalism, protesting and illegal activity to KwaDukuza saps on 032 551 8206 or 032 551 8229.”
