#ReportBack: Keeping ward 22 in the know

"With the top 5 municipalities in the country being DA-led, and the epitome of good governance and clean audits, the only way to effect real change and achieve similar successes, will be at the ballot" - Privi Makhan.

While the residents of Ward 22 may have seen some positive outcomes in the last quarter of the current financial year, many service delivery challenges persist within the ward.

The long overdue rehabilitation of Hewitt Road and Hugh Dent Drive are certainly welcomed by residents, ratepayers and visitors.

The Barrier Lane project is also nearing completion. This project began in February, following a year of escalating the imminent risks to the responsible department.

The last month has also seen 2 successful public engagements on the proposed Umhlali CBD Regeneration Strategy, spearheaded by KDM chief town planner, Mr Lunga Mhlongo.

The Umhlali Village is an integral part of the greater Umhlali and R102 node.

While the project is still in conceptualization stages, one cannot help but be enthusiastic that the centre will, in the near future, exhibit an urban feel while still retaining its strong community identity as the “village”.

The electricity network in its entirety remains a significant concern.

From extended power outages that are caused by cable theft at unprotected state assets, to the 464 non-functional streetlights, one wonders if there really is light at the end of this tunnel.

I have received assurances from the electricity business unit that swift repairs will be undertaken in the new financial year. Time will tell.

On that note, with local government elections planned for October 27, residents are encouraged to register to vote or update their details during the registration weekend scheduled for July 17-18.

With the top 5 municipalities in the country being DA-led, and the epitome of good governance and clean audits, the only way to effect real change and achieve similar successes, will be at the ballot.
