Special vote deadline tomorrow

Pregnant women or disabled citizens can apply for their vote to be cast at home.

The official deadline to get your application in for the special vote is only 24 hours away.

All citizens wishing to apply must have submitted their applications by Thursday, 17 April at 5pm. A special vote is entitled to registered voters who are unable to vote at their voting station on election day.

This includes the elderly, the disabled and heavily pregnant women. Pregnant women or disabled citizens can apply for their vote to be cast at home.

South Africans abroad can also apply for a special vote, but only if they have submitted their VEC10 before March 12.

“People who will not be in their voting district during elections are considered special votes in terms of the Electoral Amendment Act 2013,” said Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) communications officer Thabani Ngwira.

Applicants for the special vote can apply to cast their vote at the voting station where they are registered.

To apply you must submit a VEC1 to your local IEC office. Forms can only be hand-delivered (no emails or faxes are accepted), but someone else can deliver your completed form on your behalf.

“A special vote allows you to vote at your voting station on 5 or 6 May but under no circumstances can special votes be cast on any other dates anywhere in South Africa,” said Ngwira.

Those applying for a special vote can determine the status of their applications by sending an SMS to 32711 (R1.00 per SMS sent or received) or check online by entering their ID number on the IEC website.
