ANCYL calls for action against no-show councillors

ANCYL regional spokesperson Ngcebo Mazibuko said they believed there was a serious problem of authority and the role of a sub-regional structure of the ANC in KwaDukuza.

The regional African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) is calling for the ANC to act against the councillors who did not show up for a council meeting at which the new KwaDukuza mayor and speaker were supposed to be inaugurated last month.

Chairperson Mfanafuthi Ngcobo said at a media briefing last Friday they believed councillors disrespected the provincial executive committee’s (PEC) choice of council speaker Cllr Phumlile Zulu for mayor. It is believed they preferred the party whip, Cllr Dumisan Ndimande. About 30 councillors called in sick before the meeting, forcing it to be abandoned.

“We have a serious problem within the KwaDukuza sub-region because there are people who do not want the chosen mayor and speaker to be inaugurated, but they want to choose their favourite candidates. We take that as undermining the PEC. So we say ANC must be consistent with its action against those councillors who are not respecting decisions of the ANC. It happened in Durban where PEC decided against those who showed no respect against the party, so why not in KwaDukuza?” queried Ngcobo.

ANCYL regional spokesperson Ngcebo Mazibuko said they believed there was a serious problem of authority and the role of a sub-regional structure of the ANC in KwaDukuza.

“The reality of the matter is that this sub-region openly and without any shame continues to act as equal or rather superior to the regional or provincial structures of the movement. Instead of carrying out the mandate, this ‘special’ sub-region decided to reciprocate the process and question the authority of the ANC PEC.”
