Salt Rock’s councillor Makhan gives feedback on vital matters

A total of 253 street lights (of 414 non functional streetlights) have been repaired in the ward, according to the report provided by the Electrical Engineering business unit.

The last three months have been a whirlwind. While I had a glimmer of hope for a post campaign lull, I can safely conclude that the lull is yet to materialize!

The transition from PR councillor to ward councillor is certainly daunting and has its challenges. I am nevertheless learning to swim at a pretty rapid rate. Various projects in the ward have kept me on my toes and I am pleased to report back on these.

The new 1.7km long walkway along the P474 is nearing completion. This is a welcome addition for the high volume of pedestrian traffic along this route.

The Taffeni Reservoir project is also on track and completion of the project is scheduled for the middle of December. The scope of works includes the construction of a 2.5 megalitre reservoir which is the second cell for this site. The Taffeni reservoir project is a Siza water project. It is situated in Sheffield, along the P474. The project scope is for the installation of bulk water storage and associated pipelines to serve the Sheffield development area.

The condition of the beach ablutions at Salt Rock main beach remain a challenge. I am however engaging with officials from KwaDukuza Community Services business unit to map a way forward.

Last Wednesday we held a well attended public meeting at the Salt Rock Library.

The housing issue was discussed in detail and the community was sensitised to the latest development that the proposed Sheffield Housing Project actually falls within the boundary of Ward 20, due to the 2016 ward demarcation. The construction of illegal structures on this site continues at an alarming rate and we appeal to the municipality to implement urgent measures to secure their asset from further invasion. I will continue to monitor this process closely and provide feedback to the residents of Ward 22 .
