Moving on up

Long-time local councillor may soon take the next step of her career.

Ward 22 councillor Ann McDonnell may soon be changing her focus to a different sphere of government.
McDonnell, who also previously served as the ward six councillor, has been named on the Democratic Alliance’s list of candidates for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature. This could see her moving from her current position as a KwaDukuza municipality ward and Exco councillor to a member of the provincial legislature (MPL).
McDonnell, a politician for more than 20 years, said she is quite chuffed.
“My passion is still working with people but it is time for a shift, so I am happy with the news. I would like to move my focus to broader issues including health, education, policing and roads.”
If McDonnell is successful in moving to province, a by-election will be held to elect a new councillor for ward 22.
“It all depends on what happens in the upcoming elections. If I do get a seat in the provincial legislature then we will find a suitable candidate for ward 22. This may only happen around July.”
Should she take the step up McDonnell said she would miss the “comfortable home” she had made in local council.
“However I would love the opportunity to take our local concerns to a higher level.”
