Voter registration rises in KDM

Despite the increase in voters across the country, youth between the ages of 18-29 are still at a low.

More than 136 000 voters in KwaDukuza will be going to the polls for the upcoming national and provincial elections on May 8 – a significant increase from the previous elections.

IEC regional manager Paul Daniels reported to the KwaDukuza council last week that they have finalised the KwaDukuza voters roll, which saw an increase of more than 16 000 voters.

“In 2014 we went to the poles with 119 268 voters and there has since been massive growth,” he said.

Despite the increase in voters across the country, youth between the ages of 18-29 are still at a low.

In KZN only 92 065 between 18-19 have registered, while 1 375 482 voters between the ages of 20-29 have registered.

The district’s statistics have not yet been released.

With the big day around the corner, Daniels said the IEC was in the advanced stages of their preparations.

KwaDukuza continues to have 29 wards, 86 voting stations and 39 voting centres and extended to 96 sub-stations, a total of 182 voting stations.

The voter’s roll has been closed and dates have been finalised for all stages of the election.

“On April 4 we will open applications for special votes and there are two weeks to apply with the last day being on April 18. Special voting will take place on May 6 and 7 from 9am to 5pm.

“IEC staff will be trained between April 1 and 18 for the counting process. We will start delivering voting material to the stations by April 18.”
