ANC buckles under pressure, suspends Mandeni mayor
The protesters have agreed to put all protest action on hold during the investigation.
The African National Congress (ANC) KZN provincial committee today bowed to mounting pressure from Mandeni residents to suspend mayor Siphesihle Zulu during the investigation into corruption charges brought against him by the community.
After a week of violent protests the residents threatened to return to the streets if their demands were not met.
Protest leader Jabulani Biyela said they had put the protest on hold.
“We had a meeting at the Sibusisiwe community hall today and we accepted Zulu’s suspension, so that the PEC can continue with the investigations,” said Biyela.
He said Mandeni deputy mayor Phindile Sishi would be taking over his mayoral duties.

“We also requested that he stop using municipal vehicles while he is suspended and the PEC did not reject our request.
“Hopefully he will eventually step down as the mayor.”
The ANC provincial office was unable to comment at the time of publication.
