KwaDukuza municipality received the most vibrant member award in the rollout of climate change initiatives and the star of KZN award, the highest accolade granted to the municipality that does an exceptional job to implement climate change initiatives.

“All this work we have done as an institution, would not be possible if it was not for her significant contributions in international multi-lateral platforms on issues concerning the conservation of the environment.

“She had played a pivotal role in the adoption of a historic climate change agreement in 2015, known as the Paris Agreement.

“We are forever indebted to her for ensuring that South Africa is on par with other nations on matters that affect the sustainable use of the environment.”

Ilembe district municipality speaker Lucky Makhathini, KDM mayor Dr Ricardo Mthembu and KZN Salga deputy chairperson Nonhle Mkhulisi.

Mthembu’s presentation was on municipal best practices for climate change and the role of local government.

KwaDukuza is one of the few South African municipalities to have signed the compact of mayors and the municipality reports on the efforts on promoting climate change and energy efficiency and Africa’s first town to receive full compliance badges from compact of mayors/global covenant of mayors.

The compact of mayors is a global coalition of city leaders addressing climate change by pledging to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the future impacts of climate change. The Compact highlights cities’ climate impact while measuring their relative risk levels and carbon pollution.
