UPDATE: No action on Stanger crime rate

The DA are planning to march to Stanger SAPS on Saturday.

KZN police acting commissioner lieutenant general Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, did not pitch at Stanger SAPS last Friday, for what was apparently supposed to be a planned site inspection.

DA member of parliament Dean Macpherson, who has been challenging the minister of police Bheki Cele to act against Stanger police station’s poor performance, said he had information that lieutenant Mkhwanazi would visit the station last Friday and personally inspect the facility.

This was confirmed by KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo, who told the Courier that the commissioner would be at the station to discuss the issues faced by police.

This Monday, however, KZN SAPS, denied the commissioner ever planned to be at the station. He attended a meeting at Richard’s Bay on the day.

Macpherson said he was not surprised by the constant dodging.

“When the DA went to Stanger SAPS for an oversite inspection on June 19, senior management from the station booked off sick for the day.

“When I requested the statistics of the station from the police minister we found that the station had a 1.4 percent conviction rate for murder, rape, and robbery and they could not catch a single person for hijacking despite 97 cases being open in a year.

“When I asked the police minister to visit the town and come up with a plan of action, he refused to do so.

“Now the KZN police are denying that the commissioner ever planned to visit the station but that brings about more questions: why would he not? Why would he not want to see for himself what is going on?”

Macpherson said the lack of action to curb crime in Stanger spoke to the complete collapse of basic services.

“The minister rushes off to the Western Cape and Johannesburg to speak about crime because it is politically convenient to do so but when there are real people being killed and hijacked and raped, he is just not interested.”

The DA are planning to march to Stanger SAPS on November 17.
