Largest bakery in SA

The state of the art bakery can produce more than 200 000 loaves a day.

Pioneer Foods, one of South Africa’s leading food companies, officially opened it R470 million Sasko bakery at Shakaskraal last Thursday.
Sasko’s corporate affairs group executive Lulu Khumalo said their state of the art bakery is equipped to produce more than 200 000 loaves per day from multiple lines to service most of the province.
“This facility will eventually replace the one in Stanger so when it closes down our 200 long term employees will still have their jobs,” sad Khumalo.
She said the new bakery, which currently produces 8000 loaves an hour, uses cutting edge technology to enhance product quality while supporting a greener environment. It has reflective white roof sheets to reduce electrical lighting needs and also harvests rain water for truck washing and irrigation.
Khumalo said this was not only KwaZulu-Natal’s largest bakery but the biggest of its kind in the country.
“We are tremendously proud of the Shakaskraal bakery because it enables Pioneer Foods to deliver consistently while ensuring that we are operating in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner,” said Zitulele Combi chairman of Pioneer Foods.
Sasko’s Riaan Heyl said: “With Shakaskraal coming on stream we are adding critical growth capacity to the important KZN and coastal markets. This will not only improve service levels, but also provide consumers with products of the highest quality.”
