Sardine Run brings in big hauls at Pumula and Sandspit

The Sardine Run is continuing to produce large hauls of fish along the South Coast, but it is impossible to predict where next the shoaling fish would appear, said the KZN Sharks Board.

Operations manager Greg Thompson said the fish continued to behave sporadically today with the concentration of activity being between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone.

“Today one net was brought in at Pumula and another at Sandspit near Port Shepstone.

“Tomorrow it is anyone’s guess where the fish will come in close to shore,” he said.

Thompson reported that heavy sardine activity could be seen behind backline in these areas and a great many dolphins and sharks were following the run.

“Once again there were plenty of sharks spotted jumping and smashing the shoals of sardines.”

Shark safety gear has been removed from all protected beaches (bar one or two) from the Durban beachfront to Port Edward.

But Thompson cautioned again that there was no guarantee the fish would arrive in Durban soon, or at all.

The Sharks Board has appealed to members of the public to exercise caution should they enter the water during this time.
