UPDATE: Farm attack murder suspect evades capture

The man, who faces charges of house robbery and murder, previously worked on Spioenkop Farm in Upper Tongaat.

One of the men accused of the murder of 70-year-old Upper Tongaat farmer, Virathapushanam Govender, is thought to be hiding out in Verulam.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay said two operations aimed at putting him behind bars have so far been unsuccessful.

“We are working with Tongaat SAPS to find the man who will lead us to the other suspects who we believe have fled to the Eastern Cape,” said Pillay.

The men, who face charges of house robbery and murder, previously worked on Spioenkop Farm for the Govenders.

The elderly woman was gagged and left to die during a house robbery on the farm two weeks ago.

She and her husband Steve (76), who had lived on the farm for over 40 years, were tied up by three men for about eight hours while they ransacked their home.

They stole cash, jewellery and a shotgun.

Steve, who had been tied up and hit on the head, was able to shout for help at around 5am the next morning.

One of his employees heard him and came to his rescue.

He was taken to hospital with head injuries and was discharged a day before his wife’s funeral.
