Mandeni community demands police presence

The police station is currently located 6km from Hlomendlini and there are no taxi's going to or near the police station.

Close to 500 residents of Hlomendlini in Mandeni protested at the Newark Police station on Friday, demanding that the police station being moved from its current location and be built closer to them.

Resident Jabulani Nala said they want the relocation of the police station to be treated as a matter of urgency.

“People are dying and criminals are doing as they please in our area.

“The police station is too far from us and it is usually closed at night,” said Nala.

SAPS Ilembe cluster spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo said the residents handed over their memorandum to an official from the community safety and liaison department.

The Courier recently reported that Hlomendlini residents are accusing Newark police of drinking on duty, taking bribes and closing the police station at night.

The area is a hotbed of murder, rape, drugs, robbery and burglaries. Local men now patrol the area at night because they no longer trust the police.
