Tongaat mall collapses

Three dead, and many more feared to have been killed.

Three people were killed and more than 20 people are feared dead after a section of Tongaat’s new mall collapsed on construction workers this afternoon.

The mall, currently under construction, collapsed at about 4.30pm, an hour before the workers were to knock off.

Emergency personnel are currently on the scene trying to free the construction workers.

Trains to and from Stanger had to stop to allow emergency workers to attend to the injured as the only access to the rubble is over the railway tracks.

So far witnesses say three bodies have been extracted from the rubble and five injured were taken to the hospital.

A car was also buried in the rubble.

The mall is owned by owners of Waterloo Superspar and leasing agent Neil Cocker told the Courier earlier this year that the mall was set to open in May next year.
