UPDATE: Pay parking wage dispute

One of the marshals said the staff were unhappy about their employment conditions and the fact that the initial salary agreement changed.

Pay parking marshals have refused to work after hearing their salaries would decrease from R3000 a month to R1000 with 30 percent commission.

Over 50 marshals had been employed by service provider Vusa Isipho Trading Enterprise to monitor the pay parking system which was implemented by KDM in Stanger CBD, Umhlali and Ballito last November.

The system introduced a charge of R6 an hour for parking in public bays. At the launch of the project, KDM mayor Ricardo Mthembu said one of the key purposes of the scheme was to create jobs and pay people a minimum salary of R3000.

One of the marshals, who did not want to be named out of fear for victimisation, said the staff were unhappy about their employment conditions and the fact that the initial salary agreement changed.

About 16 marshals are striking outside the KDM building since this morning.

“We cannot survive on R1000 or 30 percent commission. We have also been given one uniform which we have to use every day. The management at Vusa Isipho Trading Enterprise do not care about us. Recently, one of the marshals was run over by a car in Stanger. Management did not even care enough to take her to the hospital or even to ask if she was fine.”

The woman said the marshals were only operating in Stanger since early January. She said they were told that the system would not be in Ballito but that they were not told why.

A meeting between the marshals, KDM officials and Vusa Isipho Trading Enterprise is going to take place this afternoon.
