New sporting grounds for Stanger

The land earmarked for the sport and recreational grounds is immediately adjoining the Stanger Sport Field

Residents of KwaDukuza will be glad to hear that they will receive a new public recreational sporting complex next to Stanger High School.

Many locals were up in arms after construction began on the new KwaDukuza Civic Centre and mall on the site of the golf course and previous recreational grounds.

“KDM will enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Public Works, who own the land, for the purpose of building a regional sporting complex,” said KDM communications officer Sphelelo Ngobese.

The land earmarked for the sport and recreational grounds is immediately adjoining the Stanger Sport Field, flowing from where the new hospital is being built on the south side of the school.

According to KDM, the cost relating to the development of the proposed facilities will be bourne by the developer of the golf course project, Double Ring Trading – owned by multi billion rand businessman Vivian Reddy.

“As part of the original agreement, the developer has an obligation to replace all sporting facilities lost due to the imminent development,” Ngobese said.

“The municipality has identified the sport facility at Stanger High School as the most suitable location.”

The property in question is owned by Public Works and administered by the Education department while the school governing body is currently responsible for maintenance and upkeep.

“KDM has approached all the relevant parties to hand over the obsolete and defunct sports grounds at the school to establish the new facilities for use by both the public and the school.”

As part of the obligation to replace the sports ground, Double Ring Trading has already completed a state of the art cricket pitch at Gledhow and is 80% finished with a soccer field in Shakaville.

The facilities to be constructed at Stanger High School include: a 400m tartan athletics track, a cricket oval practice pitch, a functional swimming pool, ablution facilities, soccer/rugby fields, changing rooms and tennis, volleyball, netball, and basketball courts.

Ngobese denied that KDM was footing the bill for any of these developments.

“It is a myth and factually incorrect that municipality is now doing what was meant to be done by the developer.”
